Situated close to the Cambridge University boathouses, this contemporary property occupies a distinctive position in the city.
The brief was to completely redesign the garden, creating an outside space that reflected the quality and architectural character of the house itself.
A Garden to Complement the House
The approach was deliberately simple. Generous areas of pale paving establish a clean, open setting, while carefully positioned specimen trees introduce height, character and a striking contrast to the strong architectural lines of the property.
Rather than filling the space with planting, the intention was to give each element room to breathe. The broad, sculptural canopies of the trees become natural focal points, while clipped evergreen hedging provides structure, privacy and a sense of enclosure.
The relationship between the house and garden was particularly important. The proportions of the paved areas, the positioning of the trees and the restrained choice of materials were all considered to ensure the garden felt like a natural extension of the architecture.
Simplicity, Structure and Planting
Creating a garden with a relatively limited palette requires careful attention to detail. With fewer elements, the form of each tree, the lines of the paving and the balance between planted and open spaces become all the more important.
Here, the contrast between precisely clipped evergreen forms and the more expressive shapes of the specimen trees brings character and interest without overwhelming the space.
The result is a contemporary garden that feels generous, elegant and understated, with a strong architectural identity of its own.
